The programme boasts strong links to industry that are reflected in programme design, work experience opportunities, and the employment outlook for UWS students. The significant emphasis on work-based learning and practical skills relevant to the modern industry is supported by a strong partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, which allows students to benefit from Active Schools training, and extensive placement and internship opportunities. Work placement forms a large part of the Sport Development degree and work-based learning opportunities are available within a wide range of organisations throughout the U.K. and abroad. Graduates are multi-skilled and equipped to lead sport and physical activity development in the sport, exercise, and fitness industries as, for example, Active Schools co-ordinators, sport development officers, facility managers, and health promotion professionals. The transferable skills acquired prepare you for a wide range of employment in both the public and private sectors but also for progression to postgraduate study, including physical education teaching. The modules studied will enable you to design strategies and programmes to increase community participation in sport and physical activity, to manage sport initiatives and events, and to develop youth talent pathways. Career prospects Graduates are multi-skilled and equipped to provide sport development support and leadership in the sport, exercise and fitness industries. Opportunities for employment can be found in local authorities, professional sport, the N.H.S., and commercial and government organisations. A significant number of students also progress to postgraduate study every year, including to P.E. teaching. Study abroad Students have undertaken exchange visits to Spain and the USA with many more opportunities available. Course Details - Modules

Year 1 Topics include introductions to coaching, sport and exercise science, general academic skills, physical activity and health, and sport development. Students will also engage with industry by gaining credit for volunteering and undertaking relevant practical qualifications. Year 2 Essential subjects are studied in more depth, with additional focus on sports policy, and sport development and the outdoors. Students will undertake their first formal placement at this stage. Year 3 Studies become more specialised, focusing on practical applications. Topics include social issues in sport development and coaching, sport organisations, and psychology of sport and exercise. A second workplace learning experience is undertaken. Year 4 (Honours) Global issues in sport development and operational management of sport are covered as essential elements. Students will have the option of specialising in physical activity interventions or in coaching practice and policy. Students will also undertake an Honours dissertation, a year-long independent study with a sport development focus.
