This degree will provide you with extensive theoretical knowledge and applied skills in Mathematics. In addition, you will develop professional skills through work-based learning, ensuring you are fully equipped to meet the demands of being a teacher of Mathematics.
The overall aim of the programme is to develop individuals with the knowledge and skills required to teach Mathematics at secondary school level. You will study Mathematics to Honours level, and will also develop your teaching skills in Years 3 and 4 by taking modules in Education.
What the course involves.
The programme will provide you with a broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of key areas within Mathematics and Statistics, including algebra, calculus, and numerical analysis; will develop in you the ability to apply standard methodology to the solution of classical and contemporary problems in Mathematics and Statistics; will develop in you a range of skills so that you can adapt your mathematical learning to respond to the constantly changing technological environment; and will provide you with a knowledge and skills base from which you can proceed to graduate employment as a teacher in Mathematics in secondary schools.
Year 1 you will study core modules in Mathematics and Statistics, and an option module in another science of your choosing. In Year 2, you will study more advanced core modules in Mathematics and Statistics which follow from those studied in Year 1. In Year 3, alongside specialist core and option modules in Mathematics
and Statistics, the study of Education is introduced with a focus on key educational issues, cross-cutting curricular themes, contexts for learning and professional values. Knowledge and understanding of advanced Mathematics, alongside curriculum, pedagogy and assessment of Mathematics, and the skills and abilities to implement effective teaching and learning, are developed in Year 4, through campus teaching and school experience placements. Where it could take you on successful completion of the programme you will have met the Standard for Provisional Registration, and thus be eligible to apply for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and entry to the Teacher Induction Scheme as a secondary school teacher of Mathematics.
NB: successful applicants who gain a place on this programme will need to register on the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme, managed and delivered by Disclosure Scotland (disclosurescotland.co.uk).
This programme will run in September 2019. The Mathematics modules are taught at Paisley Campus and the Education modules at Ayr Campus.
