The two subjects are fascinating, but by studying both history and sociology, you'll develop an understanding of past societies and patterns of social change. A social sciences degree helps to frame and understand contemporary issues-debates such as race, gender and social divisions. This is compounded by combining the history element of the degree. This allows for a much deeper analysis to examine issues from an historical, sociological and biographical standpoint.
During the first year in History, you will develop an over view of the formation of the United Kingdom, alongside a study of local history and an introduction to historical studies. In the second year you progress to more focused studies of British, US and European history before specialising further in your third year, when you will study a History, Sociology or combined subject in-depth for your own dissertation. Sociology modules cover the fundamentals of sociological analysis. Subjects include the sociological imagination, body politics, sexuality and social control, gender studies, deviant and criminal behaviour and social research methods.
