This degree aims to provide students with a broad background in the wide range of disciplines involved in quantity surveying and the commercial management of construction projects from both the Clients and The Contractor’s viewpoint. The course provides students with both the underpinning knowledge and a broad range of skills necessary to pursue a successful career within the industry. The course is delivered in a friendly environment to small groups; by the end of your course the lecturers will know you by name as an individual. The course covers a wide range of subjects, from cost estimating to project management techniques and health, safety and welfare. The programme is delivered through a range of lectures, site visits, tutorials and practical assignments that aim to develop the key skills the student will need in the industry.

The full-time course consists of six 20 credit modules in the first two years and four 20 credit modules with a 40 credit module in the final year. Students can change their attendance pattern from full to part-time or suspend their studies in order to take up training opportunities. Year 1 modules: Built Environment Issues, Academic & Professional Skills; Construction Technology I; Surveying ; Science, Structural Appreciation & Materials, BIM/CAD and Law for the Built Environment. Year 2 modules include: Construction Technology 2, Commercial Processes & Cost Management; Built Environment Services; Procurement & Project Management; Contract Practice & Procedures, Research Methods & GIS.

Assessments used within these Programmes are normally formative or summative. In the former assessment is designed to ensure students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. Typically, such assessment will take the form of practical exercises where a more hands-on approach shows student’s ability on a range of activities. Traditional formal time-constrained assessment is by means of tests and examinations, normally of two-hour duration. Examinations are a traditional method of verifying that the work produced is the students’ own work. To help authenticate student coursework, some modules require that the student and lecturer negotiate the topic for assessment on an individual basis, allowing the lecturer to monitor progress. Some modules where the assessment is research-based require students to verbally/visually present the research results to the lecturer and peers, followed by a question and answer session. Such assessment strategies are in accord with the learning and teaching strategies employed by the team, that is, where the aim is to generate work that is mainly student-driven, individual, reflective and where appropriate, vocationally-orientated. Feedback to students will occur early in the study period and continue over the whole study session thereby allowing for greater value added to the student’s learning.
