Course Summary

The Motorsport Engineering programmes are intended to provide you with a thorough grounding in mechanical engineering science and technologies and their application to design and the solution of a range of engineering problems in the context of the motorsport engineering industry. The programmes aim to develop your ability to work with others to apply this work to real-world problems, a skill vital for your future employability in this industry. Our graduates have demonstrated over the decades the competence to respond to the needs of employers and are recognised as able to “hit the ground running” and getting the job done. Motorsport Engineering covers three themes; core engineering covers subjects such as Maths, thermodynamics, mechanics, structures, stress analysis and advanced computational methods. The Design theme explores computational methods with practical skills in CAED. Finally, the applied technology theme teaches vehicle technology, motorsport vehicle dynamics and powertrain control, motorsport research and development and competition engine design. The degree has been be accredited as meeting the academic requirement, in part, for Chartered Engineer (CEng in Part).

Course Details - Modules

A number of themes are developed throughout the course. The core engineering theme with subjects such as Maths, Thermodynamics, Mechanics and Structures is introduced in Year 1, developed in Year 2 with Thermofluid Mechanics and Engineering Structural Design and then explored in greater depth in Year 3 with Stress Analysis and Advanced Computational Methods. The Design Theme starts in Year 1 with CAED, and is then developed in Year 2 with Computational Methods and the Group project leading into Advanced Computational Methods and the Major Project in Year 3, Finally the Applied Technology Theme moves through Vehicle Technology in Year 1, though Vehicle Dynamics and Powertrain Control in Year 2 to Advanced Vehicle Dynamics and Advanced Engine Design in Year 3. Although not a theme in itself, Engineering Management, introduced in Year 2 underpins a successful approach to both the Group and Major Projects.

Course Details – Assessment Method
