Course Summary

This degree combines a study of 2 of the richest and most influential cultures in the world through a detailed study of English literature (from Beowulf to Tom Wolfe) and the study of the Chinese language (Mandarin and Classical Chinese) supported by modules exploring Chinese culture in its various manifestations across the entire span of China's pre-modern and modern history.

Course Details - Modules

The programme is made up of the following combinations of core, compulsory and optional modules. These might alter a little from year to year owing to staff changes, curriculum development and recommendations following validation. However at level 4 there are 5 compulsory modules, including introductions to the study of English Literature, Chinese culture, Chinese language and conversation, a cross-Faculty study skills module completed by all students, and an option from a range of modules. At level 5 there are 5 compulsory modules, including modules on intermediate language skills and a range of thematic literature modules including the Renaissance and Critical theory, and a range of options. At level 6 all students complete a dissertation of 20 or 40 credits in addition to 4 modules on advanced language skills including translation and Classical Chinese and cultural and literary themes including Contemporary Literature, and a choice from a range of optional modules.
