Automotive industry in the UK and around the world has seen great technological developments in recent years and despite economic pressures the industry has faced it is set for continued growth. The technological challenges the industry faces in achieving efficiency gains to all kinds of vehicles, brought upon by increasingly stringent legislation and costumer awareness, has led to an increase in the demand for highly skilled Automotive Engineers. Our graduates have demonstrated over the decades the competence to respond to the needs of employers and are recognised as able to “hit the ground running” and getting the job done. Automotive Engineering covers three main themes; core engineering includes subjects such as Maths, thermodynamics, mechanics, stress analysis and structures. The Design theme explores computational methods with practical skills using CAED. Finally, the applied technology theme teaches vehicle dynamics and technology, powertrain control and advanced engine design.
Course Details - Modules
A number of themes are developed throughout the course. The core engineering theme with subjects such as Maths, Thermodynamics, Mechanics and Structures is introduced in Year 1, developed in Year 2 with Thermofluid Mechanics and Engineering Structural Design and then explored in greater depth in Year 3 with Stress Analysis and Advanced Computational Methods. The Design Theme starts in Year 1 with CAED, and is then developed in Year 2 with Computational Methods and the Group project leading into Advanced Computational Methods and the Major Project in Year 3, Finally the Applied Technology Theme moves through Vehicle Technology in Year 1, though Vehicle Dynamics and Powertrain Control in Year 2 to Advanced Vehicle Dynamics and Advanced Engine Design in Year 3. Although not a theme in itself, Engineering Management, introduced in Year 2 underpins a successful approach to both the Group and Major Projects.
Course Details – Assessment Method
The course is assessed by a mixture of coursework, phase tests, presentations, vivas and examinations.
