Course Details - Modules

The programme is made up of the following combinations of core, compulsory and optional modules. These might alter a little from year to year owing to staff changes, curriculum development and recommendations following validation. However at level 4 there are 5 compulsory modules which give a strong grounding in the cultural and political history of the ancient and medieval worlds and prepare the student for further study, and a choice of 1 module from a range of 4 optional modules including fieldwork experience. At level 5 there are 5 compulsory modules on topics related to research in the two departments, including a research project module where each student designs a research project, and a choice of 1 module from a range of 7 optional modules. At level 6 each student will design and complete a research dissertation worth either 20 or 40 credits. In addition they will complete 4 compulsory research-led modules and a choice of 1 module from a range of 6 optional modules.

Course Details – Assessment Method

The programme is assessed in a variety of ways and will include several of the following types of assessment: essays of 1000 to 4000 words in length, document analyses, book reviews, short reports and reflective journals, timed tests, take-home​ exams, field journals, posters, group and individual presentations, dissertations of 10,000 words, wikis, commentaries and film evaluations.
