Business success requires a breadth of knowledge and abilities. In bringing together theory and practice, this course will enable you to develop the vision, innovation and dynamism required in the contemporary business world.
The Business Management degree allows you to build the degree of your choice, by studying for a general business award or specialising in one of seven business areas: Accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, legal regulation or marketing. The course also gives you the opportunity to change pathway at the end of the first, allowing you to specialise if you wish at that point. You may also change to the general pathway at the end of the second year.
During the course, you will gain a broad range of business knowledge and skills which will enable you to pursue a career in the private or public sectors. You will also have the appropriate skills and the confidence to develop your own business.
In each year of study, you will take a combination of core and option modules, with increased flexibility as you move through your degree. You will also have the opportunity to study a foreign language as part of your course in each year.
In Year 1, you are introduced to the functions of business organisations, the broader business environment, and key management skills and competence including information gathering and analysis, accounting, economics, marketing and organisational behaviour.
In Year 2, you will be investigating and learning how businesses operate, looking at how people are managed, how you manage business operations and how managers make key decisions.
Year 2 is the year where you will start to specialise in the pathway of your choice, where you also have the ability to select modules to develop your knowledge in a certain direction within your pathway, in this case, entrepreneurship. Modules such as New Venture Creation have been selected to emphasise this area within your studies.
You may also select a module in a foreign language. Your personal tutor will help you to decide on a programme of study best suited to your abilities and personal career interests. There is also an opportunity to study abroad for a single semester.
Year 3 will enable you to apply critical and reflective approaches to exploring the challenges facing organisations at a strategic level. You will also develop your specialist area further. During the year you will complete a piece of independent research within your specialist subject area.
