Course Summary

This Foundation Degree, which incorporates a Higher National Certificate (HNC), has been designed to provide you with the essential skills for working in the multi-disciplined construction sector. There is a strong focus on both sustainability and renewable energies because understanding them is more important than ever before. The course has full accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which certifies the quality of the provision at the College. By studying on a CIOB accredited programme, you will have exemption from membership requirements, as well as access to the CIOB resources library, professional development opportunities and career progression advice and guidance. The full-time and part-time course has one start point in September. The programme has close links with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and you may become student members. Course Details - Modules

Each module is worth a specified number of credits: you take a combination of compulsory (and if available optional modules) enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. For full time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of 6 modules. For part time students it will depend on the intensity of your studies. Year One: Health, safety and welfare for construction and the built environment - 20 credits Sustainable construction and its environmental impact - 20 credits Developing research and practice - 20 credits Design principles and application - 20 credits Applied mathematics for construction and the built environment - 20 credits Building management systems (optional) - 20 credits Conversion and adaptation of buildings (optional) - 20 credits Setting out for construction engineers (optional) - 20 credits Year Two: Contract law and procedures - 20 credits Construction project management - 20 credits Construction technology and material application - 20 credits Financial management and economics - 20 credits Work based research project - 20 credits Renewable energy technologies (optional) - 20 credits Energy utilisation and efficiency within sustainable construction (optional) - 20 credits Surveying for construction engineers (optional) - 20 credits
