Course Summary

The foundation degree in Sports, Coaching and Fitness will help you to develop the specialist skills and knowledge necessary to excel within the dynamic sport coaching and fitness sector. This will enable you to grow and adapt to the public, sport and fitness demand within the industry. The course considers a broad range of relevant disciplines, preparing you for future employment in the sector. You will build a strong understanding of the physiological theory of sport and fitness, as well as health psychology, nutrition and various other topics. You will also develop your analytical and research techniques, which will support your practical skills and experience. You will explore sports coaching and leadership theories and apply this to practice. The course will also give the opportunity to reflect on your new skills and knowledge, bridging theory to practice. There is a focus on providing vocational skills in realistic working environments through professional practice opportunities, and the College has a range of specialist facilities that support both your academic and practical development. These include 3G football facilities, a modern fitness suite, a physiology lab and a sports massage and rehabilitation suite. You will be learning the correct processes and procedures involved in running a number of health and fitness assessments, including methods such as Wingate, Astrand, Cooper and Bruce testing. You will also have the opportunity to complete a number of industry-recognised qualifications during your studies, such as YMCA Gym Instructor and Sports Massage qualifications, and the Exercise Referral Consultants Certificate (a small fee will be required). Course Details - Modules

Each module is worth a specified number of credits: you take a combination of compulsory (and if available optional modules) enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. For full time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of 6 modules. For part time students it will depend on the intensity of your studies. Year One: Human Anatomy and Physiology - 20 credits Fundamentals of Training and Fitness - 20 credits Current Issues in Coaching, Health and Fitness - 20 credits Principles of Coaching and Skill Acquisition - 20 credits Nutrition for Sports Performance - 20 credits Academic Skills and Practice - 20 credits Year Two: Coaching and Leadership - 20 credits Analysis of Sports Performance - 20 credits Exercise Physiology - 20 credits Sport and Exercise Psychology - 20 credits Professional Practice in Sport and Fitness - 20 credits Research and Statistics - 20 credits

Course Details – Assessment Method

There are two formal or summative assessed pieces of work for each module. Assessment methods can include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and projects. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. In addition to formal assessments throughout modules of study there will be developmental (formative) assessments to support you with developing greater understanding of your progress. The balance of assessment by examination/test, coursework and practical depends to some extent on the optional modules you choose. The approximate percentage of the course assessed by coursework is as follows: Year 1 - 92% coursework 8% exams/test Year 2 - 100% coursework
