Course Summary

A foundation degree is a degree-level qualification that takes two years to complete, and is equivalent to the first two years of a traditional honours degree. Foundation degrees focus on relevant, work-based skills within a particular career route or profession, and are designed to increase employability and progression opportunities. Employers are actively involved in the development of foundation degree programmes to ensure you are ready for employment when you complete your studies. At the end of a foundation degree you have the option to ‘top-up’ your qualification with an additional third year of study to convert it into a full honours degree. Civil engineers will play an integral role in the development of civil infrastructure in the coming years, drawing upon their knowledge to combat the issues presented by growing populations, increased urbanisation, climate change and severe weather events. This foundation degree, which incorporates a Higher National Certificate (HNC), is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and ability to innovate and provide essential and sustainable infrastructure, including sea defences, flood protection, water treatment systems, roads, bridges and tunnels. You will benefit from the exceptional facilities at UCSD, whilst Torbay itself has 2 miles of coastline and is a UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark, making an exceptional location to study coastal disciplines. Level 4 (Year 1 for full-time students) develops the underpinning knowledge and principles associated with the construction industry. Level 5 (Year 2 for full-time students) develops the foundations of understanding from Level 4 to support with the progression of more critical thinking skills. The full-time and part-time course has one start point in September. The programme has close links with the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and you could gain student membership.
