Course Summary

The Study Abroad Programme (SAP) is a special programme for overseas students who would like to spend a period of study at Trinity Laban. Applicants must be currently undertaking a dance programme at, or equivalent, to degree level in their own country and aiming to achieve credits from their studies at Trinity Laban. The programme offers the opportunity to broaden your experience and skills at one of the world's leading institutions for contemporary dance. Our academic year comprises three terms: September to mid-December, early January to end-March and mid-April to the beginning of July. The year is the equivalent of two semesters. You can spend one term or the full year with us, starting at the beginning of the academic programme in September. Your individual programme will be made up of the modules/components offered on the second year of Trinity Laban’s BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance programme. The BA (Hons) Contemporary Dance programme is designed to encourage students to develop as an independent, autonomous learner and grow into a confident, creative dance practitioner. The second year in particular is designed to encourage your versatility, individuality and risk taking as well as to develop professional skills. The experience will contribute to preparing you for a career in contemporary dance by giving you the opportunity to develop the technical, creative and performance skills needed to become an individual and versatile dance artist. The programme will also help you gain the contextual understanding and the critical, analytical and reflective skills which will inform your artistic practice. Alongside daily classes in contemporary dance techniques and classical ballet, creative workshops will help you shape your artistic practice and develop your choreographic voice. You will have opportunities to create your own choreography and perform in your own and others' dance works. Reflecting on a range of creative processes and investigating movement and dance in its historical, social and cultural contexts will allow you to locate your own practice and to explore areas that interest you. The year ends with a major performance project which enables you to work with leading dance practitioners (members of the Trinity Laban teaching faculty as well as visiting dance artists) to restage historically significant repertoire. Credits are awarded in respect of each component or module successfully passed. You will also be issued with an academic transcript and a certificate of completion of the Study Abroad Programme. Students can select from the following components: - Contemporary Dance Techniques - Classical Ballet - Contact Improvisation - Choreography - Resourcing Performance - Choreological Studies - Historical Project - Investigating Arts Practice - Dance and the Moving Image - Dance Artist in Community and Education - Performance Design
