Studying TESOL and English Literature gives you the opportunity to explore the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language, alongside a diverse and stimulating literature course, stretching from Beowulf to contemporary fiction. This three-year BA degree opens up a range of exciting career possibilities – teaching English offers a great way to expand your horizons, and you will also gain transferable skills, which are highly valued by employers in many fields. Some 96% of graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015), and the department is ranked in the top 15 for graduate prospects (Times and Sunday Times 2018). Our TESOL and English Literature graduates enter careers such as education, teaching English as a foreign language, business, journalism, media and public relations, law and speech and language therapy. Students on this course typically develop excellent oral and writing skills and you will learn to present your ideas in a range of formats, along with strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will be able to study language teaching methodology, vocabulary, grammar and meaning, psycholinguistics, first and second language acquisition and discourse analysis. English Literature modules include gothic and genre fiction, gender and culture, renaissance literature, national and global literatures, modernity and contemporary writing, nineteenth century literature, creative writing and professional writing. You can develop programming skills through computer-assisted language learning materials and receive training in research methods including reporting and analysis of data. In year 2, you have option of taking the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), a professional qualification for teachers of English as a foreign language. Also in year 2, you have the opportunity for a semester abroad in the USA, Hong Kong or Singapore, further enhancing your student experience and your career prospects. Teaching on the course is informed by our world-leading research – TESOL at Swansea is ranked seventh in the UK (Research Excellence Framework 2014) - and you can attend seminars organised through our guest speaker programme. This degree programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials and seminars. You will usually receive nine hours minimum scheduled contact time with your teachers every week. Full attendance at lectures, seminars and personal tutorials (personal tutorials are obligatory). All Arts and Humanities degree programmes include independent learning which requires initiative and hard work. We will challenge you with demanding teaching and assessment. Assessment includes essay, coursework and examination, presentations and a dissertation.
