Regrettably there is still some stigma attached to mental illness. Combating this and helping the individuals and their families deal with it is a key part of a career in Mental Health nursing. Nursing students require the desire to help people. They should be practical and know how to manage their time. Students must have a non-judgemental attitude. Students will develop effective communication and leadership skills and the ability to work in a team. You must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and an ability to work as part of a team which includes psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, community workers, occupational therapists and, physiotherapists. The main tool mental health nursing students have is the strength of their own personality and communication skills. Students will need to empathise with the people they are dealing with and show warmth and care about them. Mental Health nursing students will also need to have a good understanding of the theories of mental health and illness. Work Placements We have the full support of many healthcare providers and are able to offer a wide range of clinical experiences and placements in South West Wales. Students are based at our Swansea campus for lectures. Clinical placements may be hospital-based or in community teams. Students can also benefit from short study visits abroad.
