Course Summary

Our single honours programme in Medieval Studies offers you an opportunity to engage with the Middles Ages through covering history, literature and languages. Through group work, debate, written exercises and essays, and in-class discussion you will come to understand the key themes and debates in medieval history and literature, and will be offered the opportunity to practice your practical language skills. Our programme draws from a variety of teaching and assessment methods to offer you the opportunity to engage with the Middle Ages dynamically, with access to a range of subject specialisms in History, Medieval History, English Literature, Classics and Ancient History, and Ancient Languages. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, our course places flexibility and optionality at its core, supporting you to gain the skills required for both academic and non-academic graduate employment in areas. Our focus is to develop you as a communicator, researcher, leader and team-player. History/Medieval Studies at Swansea achieved an overall satisfaction rating of 93% in the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS) while 94% of graduates are employed or in further study 6 months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015). Medieval Studies graduates have advanced to careers in sectors such as heritage, arts administration, teaching, archive work, journalism, copywriting, civil service, and further graduate studies. You will also have the option of studying a semester abroad in your second year, or a Year Abroad. A variety of destinations and experiences are on offer (study at a university abroad, work placement, volunteering, etc.) with the aim of enhancing intercultural awareness and life skills.
