Journalism, Media and Communications with a Year Abroad
Course Summary
As human beings, we spend more time consuming media than any other activity. Only sleeping takes up more of our time. In the digital age, traditional news and media platforms are further supplemented by a huge proliferation of online platforms. Choice therefore, has never been greater and quality has never been so variable. In the age of “fake news” for example, the ability to differentiate objective fact from speculative rhetoric has never been more important. Today’s graduates are not only the consumers of mass information, they are also its curators and creators, and would-be journalists now need to develop their own personal brands within a congested market place.
The programme aim therefore is to equip students with a three way analytical, practical and employability skill set that will enable them to more easily enter into the graduate job market. You will explore creative media practice, radio and video production, digital and social media, journalism, public relations and marketing on this four-year course, opening up a range of exciting career opportunities in this fast-moving sector.
As a student on our BA Journalism, Media and Communications programme, you will be joining a department that is ranked in the top 10 in the UK for overall student satisfaction. (NSS 2017, NSS 2018).
Some 91% of graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015), and 75% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18.
Our Media and Communication graduates are truly international and are employed not just in the UK but all around the world. They have careers in journalism, media, business, public relations and marketing, digital marketing, broadcasting, TV and radio, and publishing.
Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, this course will give you a thorough understanding of the history and theory of media and communication, media law, and film as well as practical skills and techniques relevant to a range of modern digital media fields.
You will have access to our Media Creativity Suite, which has a video studio and a computer lab kitted out with iMacs installed with industry standard software, including Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Creative Cloud.
We offer a flexible degree structure with a wide range of specialist modules that allow you to tailor your studies to your future career goals while developing your individual interests. You also have the option to study a number of modules in Welsh.
Our teaching staff comprises specialist international researchers and also ex-professionals lecturing on video production, web and creative design, PR and journalism, giving you an unrivalled mix of academic and industry experience, further supported by lectures and seminars by guest speakers.
You will gain excellent oral and writing skills and learn to present your ideas in a range of formats. You will also develop strong research and analytical skills and the ability to problem solve and make informed decisions.
During your third year you will have the opportunity to study abroad for a year at one of our many partner institutions across the world, enhancing your student experience and boosting your career prospects.
