English with Creative Writing with a Foundation Year
Course Summary
The English Literature and Creative Writing Foundation Year will offer an exciting introduction to higher education and is part of a 4-year undergraduate integrated degree. This foundation year will ideally suit those that need a little more support after further education before undertaking an undergraduate degree, or those returning to education after a gap.
The inclusive learning environment, delivered by an expert programme team, will meet your needs to feel comfortable at Swansea University. We are interested in your future and committed to supporting you to get where you want to be, and this foundation year will be a great place to start your journey in higher education.
The foundation programme offers exciting and innovative content in the modules that deal with the notion and understanding of what it is to be human. You will explore what it is to be human using the humanities and social sciences, including a great variety of theory and literature delivered by academics within your full degree subject area. A final year project supervised from a subject expert in the English Literature and Creative Writing degree teaching team will allow you to explore an area of interest to you within your chosen discipline.
After progression from the foundation year, you will will learn how to write novels, write for the stage, screen and broadcast, write short stories and non-fiction, write poetry, writing as a career and explore styles and genres. You will also study the history, traditions and theory of English Literature. You will be taught by experienced writers with established reputations whose works have been widely published, broadcast and performed and by academic staff internationally recognized for their research. Visiting creative writing speakers also give guest lectures.
By studying on this three-year BA degree, you will be joining a department ranked seventh in the UK for its research excellence (REF 2014) and in the top 15 for graduate prospects (Times and Sunday Times Complete University Guide 2018).
73% of our English Literature students achieve a 1st or 2.1 degree (2017-18) and 97% are in employment or further study within six months of graduation. Our graduates enter careers such as education, journalism, media and public relations, business and public services.

Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, the course will give you a thorough understanding of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Swansea is the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, widely regarded by many literary scholars as one of the twentieth century's most influential lyrical poets, and you will have the chance to be involved in projects with the Dylan Thomas Centre, named after him, and with the National Theatre Wales.
