If you are interested in studying American History, Literature and Politics alongside studying English Literature then this is the degree for you. Our American Studies and English Literature degree programme offers you the opportunity to: • Cover aspects of American civilization, examining history, literature, politics, society and popular culture from the discovery and founding of the “New World” up to and including the ever-changing modern face of the most influential nation on the planet. • Cover English Literature themes from the early-Medieval period to the present day with optional modules available in Creative Writing. Swansea is the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, widely regarded by many literary scholars as one of the Twentieth Century's most influential lyrical poets, and amongst the finest as such of all time. Ranked 4th in the United Kingdom Swansea University is one of the leading centres for American Studies according to the Guardian Good University Guide 2017. American Studies is ranked 2nd in the United Kingdom for graduate prospects by the Independent Complete University Guide 2017 and 97% of our graduates are employed within six months of graduating according to the latest DLHE 2015 figures. Our Employability Officer supports our students with information and advice which is backed up by the University’s Careers Service and Work Placement Team. All students have access to events, workshops and employer talks, including an annual conference for students in June to support final year students with the transition into the world of work. With this degree programme you have the option to study abroad for a semester as part of your degree. You can either choose to go East and study in Hong Kong, China or Singapore or West and study in North America or Canada. This Semester Abroad opportunity costs no additional tuition fees; this means that you have the chance to study at an overseas institution without having to pay any further fee on top of the tuition fee you are already paying. You will, however, have to pay for your flight costs, accommodation, living expenses and any additional expenditure. Course Details – Assessment Method

This degree programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials and seminars. You will usually receive nine hours minimum scheduled contact time with your teachers every week. Full attendance at lectures, seminars and personal tutorials (personal tutorials are obligatory). All Arts and Humanities degree programmes include independent learning which requires initiative and hard work. We will challenge you with demanding teaching and assessment. Assessment includes essay, coursework and examination, presentations and a dissertation.
