Course Summary

Swansea is the only university in the UK to offer the unique BA Honours English - Chinese Translation and Interpreting programme, opening up exciting careers in a wide range of sectors including business, finance, education, media and public relations, government and public services. The impact of globalisation and the rapid development of new electronic media have highlighted the importance of effective inter-cultural communication, meaning that well-qualified translators and interpreters are essential. Some 91% of our Languages, Translation and Interpreting graduates are employed or in further study within six months of graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015) and 84% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, this clearly structured three-year course offers comprehensive training in specific translation and interpretation techniques, provided through a broad mix of practical and theoretical experiences. As a student on this course, you will have the opportunity to acquire concentrated language proficiency, and develop translation and interpretation skills in advanced English together with in-depth knowledge of specialised business, legal or scientific/technical language. In addition, you will be able to develop valuable communication and interpersonal skills through class discussions, presentations, group and pair work and role-play. Practical training modules are based in our computer laboratories, which are equipped with the latest versions of the leading translation software tools. You will also experience an external virtual learning environment incorporating mobile apps and online videos to further enhance independent study, and you will have options to pursue work experience opportunities during the course. The programme is only available to those with a native or near-native command of Chinese Mandarin, plus a high level of competence in English as a foreign language.
