Course Summary

Studying Education and Mathematics at Swansea will give you a range of skills and knowledge, opening up the potential for exciting and rewarding careers in education and in roles where the ability to think rationally and to process data clearly and accurately are highly valued by employers. On our three-year BSc Education and Mathematics degree, you will study policy and politics, leadership and management, educational practice in a digital age, learning and teaching, education in other countries, diversity and wellbeing in education, child development and educational neuroscience, as well as pure and applied maths and mathematics for finance, nonlinear partial differential equations, non-commutative geometry and algebraic topology. If you want to explore fundamental and advanced concepts of Mathematics and consider a broad spectrum of education theory and practice, this is the ideal course for you. You also have the opportunity to undertake work placements in organisations such as schools, local authorities, business and charities to enhance your student experience and your career prospects. The degree is designed for UK, EU and international students, and it considers education in a wide context – it is not confined to formal primary and secondary school settings, but also covers further and higher education, social services, local and national government, and education in the community. Some 94% of UK Education graduates overall are in employment or in further study six months after graduation (DHLE 2016). Our Mathematics department is ranked fourth in the UK for graduate prospects (The Complete University Guide, 2018) and 91% of students are in work or study six months after finishing their degree (Uni Stats, 2016). An Education and Mathematics degree provides an excellent foundation for many types of careers, including: early years teaching, play therapy, education administration, community development work, education research, local authority roles, learning mentoring and community education welfare, education publishing, computer programming and systems administration, roles within the financial sector, actuary, and business, statistical analysis, marketing and sales, education departments in museums, galleries and theatres, local and national government and in social services. You will need and additional ITE/PGCE qualification to become a teacher. Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus, in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will be able to specialise on learning in a digital age and experiment, assess and reflect on digital learning technologies at the heart of current trends in education theory and practice. In your final year, you will complete an independent research-based dissertation, developing the knowledge and skills you have gained to become a research-effective educationalist.
