Teaching is informed by our current excellence in research, in areas such as natural products, materials engineering, and medicine, and the Chemistry Department is currently working on vital projects such as delivering clean water and sanitation and affordable, clean energy in the developing world. On this four-year course, you will have the opportunity to study the main branches of chemistry - organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and instrumental and analytical techniques. The course will develop both your theoretical and practical skills, including lab classes that incorporate a blended, e-learning pre-lab workshop to ensure that you are confident and competent to work in the labs safely and efficiently. You will also be able to use the innovative pre-lab simulation to practise lab skills in your own time. The MChem degree builds on the solid foundation of the BSc course, but explores the main topic areas in further depth. The defining feature of the MChem is a substantial research project, embedded in a research group. Typically, your research group will include a mix of postgraduate students and research staff and has the potential to result in publishable work. Uniquely, these projects can sit within other colleges as well as Science, such as Engineering or Medicine, to further your specialism. Course Details - Modules

In the first year students a 'chemical thinking' module will prepare students for University study. Then, structure and bonding and reactions will be considered, showing how the main areas of chemistry blend together. Finally in first year, 'chemical practice' will embed research skills and introduce students to chemistry in context of professional lives and careers. Practical skills are embedded into these modules, giving all important laboratory experience. Second year modules cover the traditional disciplines of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Areas of strength in Swansea research such as materials chemistry, medicinal chemistry and environmental chemistry will also be introduced. These will include more advanced laboratory sessions. The third year delves deeper into the core subjects, with options to allow specialisation and further advance practical skills and project work. The final year of MChem projects takes students to an advanced level in core subjects and specialisms chosen by the student. The focus is a large research project, embedded with research groups and of a potentially publishable nature. The MChem is an FHEQ Level 7 qualification, meeting the academic requirements for chartered chemist and chartered scientists status when other professional experience has been developed.
