You’ll learn about the current contexts and challenges facing hotel managers in their decision-making and you will use your critical analysis skills to seek solutions to problems. By the time you graduate, you will have two years’ work-experience and the knowledge and professional skills to be an effective manager in this exciting and dynamic sector. The University of Surrey has a long history of providing the hotel sector with exceptional employees from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Many of our alumni can be found in the most senior positions in hotels across the globe. This new programme develops on this, providing an additional professional focus with two years of industry training making up half of the programme, and a more vocational focus. In addition to our exceptional on-campus hospitality facilities used as training sites, the School has long-standing relationships with hotel companies. This gives students unparalleled opportunities to develop professional skills and network with those working in the sector, including through guest lectures and other events. The first year of your course will be spent at the University, developing an understanding of the basics of hotel management and service delivery, and developing professional and operational skills. This will include time in our training restaurant, developing an understanding of both front-of-house and kitchen operations. In Year 2, you will further develop your skills in an operational role at a hotel. You will continue your studies whilst working, taking two online modules with assessments based on your work environment. Year 3 will be based at the University, studying more strategic issues in the sector before moving into a second year of industry experience in a more supervisory role. Again, you will study two online modules while working, leading up to the creation of a strategic development plan for the hotel you are working in.
