Course Summary

Get practical, professional preparation for a career in media with our BA (Hons) Media and Communication course. Learn a wide array of the skills you’ll need for a rewarding career in the media on one of the UK’s longest running media degree courses. We are based in Birmingham City University's £62 million Parkside facility – the biggest media centre in the UK. The degree course offers a range of optional production and research modules in new media, photography, television, radio, PR and music industries. The structure of the degree course allows you to create the skillset that you want, across the media formats which interest you. We provide specialised, sophisticated equipment for every area in our Parkside Building, including six radio studios, four TV studios, the largest free-standing green screen in Europe, editing suites, music production studios and photography studios (including a half and a full infinity cove). Our BA (Hons) Media and Communication course mirrors the workflow of the industry, offering practical, professional preparation for a rewarding career. We are helped by strong links with many influential media organisations, to offer an industry-relevant blend of production, theory and professional studies, regardless of the modules you choose. The Professional and Academic Studies module prepares you for at least two placements in a media or cultural industries organisation, such as large major broadcasting corporations, national events spaces, newspapers, magazines, PR companies and local radio stations. Teaching takes place in practical environments such as radio, TV and photography studios, editing suites, computer suites, as well as lecture theatres, seminar rooms, social learning spaces and online. You use blogs, create wikis, and employ social media channels and other interactive media to support your work and self-development into becoming a thinking media worker. Why Choose Us? We allow the flexibility to opt for a general study of Media and Communication, or a specialist route in radio, television, web and new media, music industries or public relations. All equipment in our state of the art media centre in the city is yours to use, and our research-informed teaching enables you to critically engage with contemporary debates and innovations in theory/practice. We frequently run a huge range of guest speaker masterclasses. Across each of the undergraduate degree routes there is an equal emphasis on production, theory and professional studies. You will use blogs, create wikis and other interactive media to support work and self-development. The School maintains close contacts with a variety of media organisations and visiting tutors and guest speakers regularly hold master class sessions to enhance and enrich students’ learning.
