Course Summary

This programme gives you the opportunity to work in a variety of Media and Film specialisms including Scriptwriting, Cinematography, Editing and Interview & Presentation Techniques. Over the course of the two years you will develop a portfolio and show-reel which will be invaluable for your progression within the industry. Your final year will prepare you for employment within the creative industries or how to take the next step into the final year of a full degree. This course offers a much more personal experience with smaller class sizes than larger universities. The course is intended for anyone with a passion for film and media and is looking for a potential future professional career in the film and media sector, and any student who wishes to enhance their skills in film production. Independent learning When not attending lectures you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research, preparing coursework assignment and presentations, and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of facilities including the learning centre. Overall workload Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, around 15 hours’ independent learning and assignment activity. Academic Support Our HE Academic Support Tutor provides help in the following areas: • Study skills (including reading, writing, note-taking and presentation skills) • Written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy) • Academic writing (including how to reference) • Research skills (in conjunction with the learning centres) • Critical thinking and understanding arguments • Revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management) Following completion of the HND at level 5 you may then opt to progress to a BA (Hons) Top-up degree at a number of institutions with the primary route being to Sunderland University. The Top-up degree will enable you to maintain a breadth of study right up to degree level. Potential career opportunities – Film Editing, Film Production, Film Scriptwriting, Art Direction, Production Design.

Course Details - Modules

At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the creative industries sector through five core units, which includes two units assessed through a Pearson set assignment. The core units are: • Individual Project (Pearson - set) • Creative Media Industry • Professional Practice • Collaborative Project (Pearson – set) • Personal Professional Development Within this ‘specialist pathway’, there are four related mandatory units: • Film Practices • Film Studies • Editing for Film and Television • Advanced Film Production Studies Additional Units may cover such production areas as: • Storyboarding • Cinematography – Camera • Interview and Presentation Techniques • Drama • Documentary • Scriptwriting • Film Criticism • Narrative • Marketing and Promotion
