Course Summary

English the study of literature and language through a range of specialist and skill-based modules. Students will explore poetry, prose and drama alongside modules in literary criticism and linguistic analysis. Applicants can choose to study 3 years of English or alternatively in year 2 move to a choose an alternative pathway:. Pathway 1: Literature and Creative Writing: is designed to give students the opportunity to specialise as writers, critics, and practitioners. Throughout the degree, specialist supervisors give them guidance and support with the aim of enhancing and developing confidence in their creativity, critical skills and judgement. Students have the opportunity to create a portfolio of published work, including poems, short stories, scripts, flash fiction, podcasts, and novellas. Pathway 2: Literature and Linguistics: enables students to combine innovative approaches to literature with cutting-edge research in linguistics. On the course, students engage with contemporary subjects in literature and study a range of linguistic topics, such as language acquisition and disorders, and variation in spoken language. The degree allows students to practise key skills in sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, psycholinguistics and literary linguistics.
