The BA (Hons) Counselling provides you with the theory and skills to work as a counsellor, psychotherapist or therapist working in settings that include work-based counselling, student counselling, primary practice, hospital, mental health settings, voluntary and private practice.
This course is a vocational training giving students the theory, skills and self-awareness to become practising therapists able to work from humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) approaches. Students develop their self-awareness and learn to use their counselling skills to become confident therapeutic practitioners.
The course adheres to British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy guidelines and ethics, and students are able to apply to become student members leading to the opportunity to become registered members by the end of the course, and to begin the process of applying for individual accreditation. Students learn research skills and evidence-based approaches to therapy. The course has no examinations, using a variety of student assessment including essays, course and placement presentations.
By the second and third year the course requires also students to spend up to two days in counselling placement so the student can fulfil the required 100 counselling hours and build work place experience that will enable students to build good employment skills and potential. Students are supported to use the course and placement opportunities to build an impressive set of work experience that will lead to employment opportunities.
