Course Summary

History has experts researching and teaching in many aspects of the political, social, environmental and economic history of Scotland, from the Vikings to the present day. You will tackle questions central to understanding both Scotland’s past and present, which provide a window on Scotland’s interaction with the wider world. With this degree, you can access a range of careers, such as teaching, journalism, business management, local and national government, law, the heritage industry and conservation. Scottish history can be taken as a Single Honours degree, or in a number of combined degrees as a Scottish History stream of the History degree. The first two years provide the strong foundations that any student of Scottish history needs, while years three and four allow you to choose from an ample selection specialisms. Our modules will allow you to explore, among other themes, the history of the Picts and the Vikings, Wallace and Bruce, the Covenanters, the union of 1707 and the emergence of radical politics in the nineteenth century, not to mention other modules of your choice on American, European, African and British history. The final year allows you to become a researcher yourself and thereby practice the skills you have learned and hone your analytical and problem-solving skills for life beyond university. You will have the opportunity to do one Special Subject, working closely with our staff, leading experts in their fields, in small groups, hands on cutting-edge historical research themes, using real primary sources.
