Course Summary

How do major international institutions, issues and ideas shape our societies? International Politics concerns issues of power, alliances, conflict and peace, trade, the role of NGOs and the notion of an international society. Through your study, you’ll gain insight into international decision-making in the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the World Trade Organisation and others. More widely, we’ll equip you with the kinds of intellectual and analytical skills that are attractive to many employers. Politics graduates are to be found in commerce and industry, as well as the civil service, journalism, law and teaching. If you are contemplating a future in the world of politics, then you need to understand issues of power, alliances, conflict and peace, the workings of influential organisations and the processes surrounding international decision making. Don’t worry if this sounds daunting because we can help you. Consistently nominated for prestigious RATE (Recognising Achievements and Teaching Excellence) awards, our Politics department is highly regarded and students benefit from a strong research-led approach to teaching. Besides an International Politics dissertation in semesters 7-8, Honours Option Modules are offered in Semesters 5-8 and provide International Politics students with a choice of modules on aspects of international politics such as (among others): Human Rights in International Politics; Global Political Economy; Global Environmental Politics; Religion and Politics Worldwide; Issues in International Politics; and Middle East Politics. Stirling Politics students make extensive use of the Study Abroad opportunities offered at the University to study for a full semester or a whole academic year at participating universities in Australia, Canada, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. The ERASMUS programme is particularly popular and Politics students participate in dedicated Politics ERASMUS exchanges with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland.
