Fashion Design with a Foundation Year

Course Summary

The foundation course is an exciting step towards your chosen degree. It provides an opportunity to develop skills to equip you on your professional journey into the creative industries. The programme encompasses elements of fashion design, fashion business and textile design degree routes. It provides a platform for you to share with and learn from others, while developing visual communication skills and processes. It will help you in building confidence and independence ready for the next stage of your degree. We aim to excite, engage and challenge you, pushing you to develop into a capable student with a great fashion and textiles aesthetic as well as an enthusiasm to learn. This four-year programme has been specifically designed to allow you to undertake additional level three study, to ensure you are successful on your chosen degree programme. After successful completion of your foundation year, you will have the flexibility to switch (should you wish to change direction) onto a number of related undergraduate degree programmes within the School of Fashion and Textiles. This course will nurture you to become a highly creative practitioner within the global fashion industry. You will develop your full potential by building knowledge, experience and skills for either the menswear or womenswear markets. Following guidance from industry experienced specialist tutors you will be supported to achieve your own aspirations via focussed projects, competitions, internships and live briefs. You will gain links within the industry taking advantage of extensive contacts with both international and regional companies. The course provides skills in design development and realisation, CAD, illustration, pattern cutting, the history and context of fashion, and production methods related to both industrial manufacture and bespoke production. This course has excellent links to international fashion brands, including Burberry, Karen Millen, Abercrombie and Fitch, Adidas, H&M and Iris Van Herpen. Staff have industry experience within computer aided design, pattern cutting, fashion history and design and have worked alongside many internationally recognised brands. Learn to work with the Gerber pattern cutting and design system, widely used in the industry alongside supportive staff that are well placed to inspire and shape your future careers. Each year a selection of our final year students showcase their final year work to industry leaders at events such as Graduate Fashion Week and New Designers in London.

Standard Qualification Requirements

A maximum of 4 subjects are considered. These can be other A/S Levels (as long in a different subject) A-Levels or Level 3 equivalents.

Achieve a minimum of 80 tariff points achieved in either five Highers or from a combination of two Advanced Highers plus two Highers. Where only Highers have been taken a minimum of grades CDDDD is required. Where a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers have been taken you must achieve grades of DD in two Advanced Highers plus grades of DD in two Highers.
