Course Summary

Our Biomedical Science degree provides you with the essential skills required by professional biomedical scientists at our purpose designed Science Centre. Our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree can lead to a wide range of exciting careers in biomedical sciences. You’ll study in our purpose-built Science Centre under the guidance of specialist academics. Our expertise includes clinical biochemistry, medical microbiology, clinical immunology, cellular pathology and molecular diagnostics. A high proportion of your class contact time will be in the laboratory. Towards the end of Year 1, you’ll be able to apply for a competitive place on our Applied Biomedical Science route. Ideal if you are looking to become a registered biomedical scientist with the NHS, this route involves taking a 14-week clinical placement and completion of the registration portfolio, which will make you eligible to apply for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration when you graduate. On successful completion of study, we will issue: BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (with a placement year) Work placements You will attend a work placement between the second and final years of the course, our placement staff will work with you to identify a suitable location for your work placement. Please also note that you are responsible for any costs incurred in travelling to and from your work placement, and for any accommodation costs. If you do not meet our direct entry requirements for degree level study, then a BSc (Hons) with a Foundation Year is available. You’ll study your first year at City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College and on successful completion join the BSc (Hons) course at the Stoke-on-Trent university campus. High levels of tutor support and guidance will prepare you for degree level study. The foundation year for this course has a long successful track record in providing a smooth transition onto our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree. This route is useful if you have only studied sciences up to GCSE level or have had a break in your studies.

Course Details - Modules

Year 1 core units include Bioscience Concepts and Practice, Structure and Function, Building Blocks of Life, Professional Practice for Biomedical Scientists and Biology of Disease. Year 2 core units include Professional Practice and Placement, Infection Science, Public Health, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology and Immunology, Biochemistry and Blood Science and Physiological Function. Year 3: Placement Year 4 core units include Research Project, Cellular Pathology, Medical Genetics, Human Infectious Disease, Haematology and Transfusion Science and Clinical Immunology.
