Course Summary

A practical degree with both a general and a specialist focus, preparing you academically and professionally to be able to hit the ground running in the Sports and Leisure industries. This programme combines a general understanding of Business and Management together with thorough coverage of the key areas in the field. From Finance and Marketing, through to Strategy and Social Responsibility, you will move to focus on more specialist subject areas, including Sports Event Management, Sports Journalism, High Performance Personnel Management and Sports Law. The programme is of particular interest to students looking for a business or management career in the sports and leisure industries. A placement year enables students to undertake a year of experience in an organisation between their second and final year. It is a substantial piece of paid experience where you can make a real contribution to your employer and it can really make you stand out from the crowd! It will also enable you to: Apply the knowledge and skills you gain from your course in a work setting Build your commercial awareness and insights into organisations and industries you might want to work in. Develop your professional skills through company training, networking skills and confidence in the workplace Get some great experience for future job applications or even land a graduate job! Securing a placement can really help you develop your job search skills and the Employability Service placement and careers teams can support you to find and apply for available opportunities. You will need to attend some preparatory workshops which will explain all aspects of the placement year and give you the skills to find the placement of your choice. With access to our jobs board, careers events and employer contacts you will be able to approach companies confidently and find the right opportunity for you. Please note: in the event that you cannot secure a placement you will be able to transfer onto the 3 year version of your degree programme.

Course Details - Modules

Year 1 - During the first year you will be introduced to the principal areas of business & management, whilst at the same time gaining an overview of the sports & fitness industries & looking at the specifics of managing people in sport. Year 2 - In the second year you will study the core disciplines of Marketing & Financial Accounting & will focus on the business of sport within the current economic environment. Within the Marketing module students will develop their understanding of the fundamental marketing concepts, applying knowledge learned through case studies specific to the sports & leisure industries. Year 3 - In the final year you will be able to enhance your knowledge of the sports & leisure industries by undertaking a range of dedicated options. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a piece of research on a particular aspect of the sports & leisure industries, which will be presented in the form of a dissertation.
