BA History (with Placement Year) with Foundation Year
Course Summary
The History programme is designed to give you a broad overview of historical development and change over time, as well as the opportunity to study particular periods and historical themes in more detail. It is also designed to enable you to develop the analytical and communication skills which are vital for gaining rewarding graduate-level employment. It can be taken either as a Single or Joint Honours subject. You can follow a general programme of modules or follow concentrations in Early Modern History, Modern History, Cultural History or non-European History.
Our undergraduate degrees with a foundation year are an alternative entry route into university for those without more traditional qualifications or grades, or are entering university after a notable period of time out of education.
The programme offers support and guidance in developing the skills required for degree-level study.
The foundation year will focus specifically on communication (oral and written), critical thinking, research, independent study, digital and employability skills.
The modules are designed to embed the development of these skills within the broad areas of business, communications, humanities and social sciences.
On successful completion of the foundation year, students will automatically progress on to the first year of our History programme
A Placement Year is an opportunity to put what you’re learning on your course into practice, to build your professional network, gain relevant experience to add to your CV and get an insight into what it is really like to work in a particular sector. It could even lead to a graduate job; all before the start of your final year!
During the Placement Year, not only will you be an employee of the organisation, which will come with commitments and regulations, you will be representing St Mary’s University and will be expected to behave in a responsible and professional manner at all times, upholding and enhancing the reputation of the University.
Specifically, you will need to adhere to the regulations that apply within your workplace and to the St Mary’s Student Charter and Work Placement Terms and Conditions (available in My Placements on e:Vision).
As an employee, you have a responsibility to find out, understand and meet all expectations set by your Placement Supervisor and the Placement Provider organisation more generally.
Course Details - Modules
Level 4 is an introductory year during which you are introduced to new ideas, new periods of history, and new ways of making connections across themes, topics and geographical areas. With support from your tutors, you will begin to develop the skills you need to study history in greater depth. The Level 5 modules are designed around broad themes, and are all taught through lectures and seminars, using a wide range of primary and secondary sources. Single Honours students typically take the core module and choose five optional modules across the academic year. You study subjects in much greater depth, using original source material as evidence. Single Honours students (and students majoring in History) must complete a dissertation in history, and choose four more modules from the list of options. The dissertation is a piece of independent research: it is a significant piece of supervised academic writing that takes a full academic year to complete.
