Course Summary

The HNC Bioscience course has been developed to provide students with a strong foundation in biological knowledge and understanding together with training in the basic practical and laboratory techniques used by the bioscience industries. Core studies cover the theory and practice of cell biology, biochemistry and microbiology as well as a consideration of environmental issues and fundamental training in IT software use. This common core is combined with a range of optional modules, according to the stream of study and campus chosen. The HNC Bioscience course provide an excellent first step in higher education for employment in the bioscience sector. It allows students to find out which aspects of biology they are most interested in, as well as the industrial applications of these subjects. The course provides different pathways of study, so that students can develop their individual interests and abilities leading to a range of progressions and employment opportunities.

Course Details - Modules

For students to graduate with HNC Bioscience, they must pass 12 units in total, 7.0 Mandatory and 5 Optional. For progression to year 2 of an HND or degree, passes in an additional 3 units are required i.e. 15 in total. All units are at SCQF level 7. All students take the following Mandatory Units: Bioscience: Graded Unit 1; Environmental Awareness; Information Technology: Applications Software 1; Quality and Health & Safety Systems in Science Industries; Biochemistry: Theory and Practice; Microorganisms: Growth; Activity and Significance, Cell Biology: Theory and Practice. In addition to the mandatory units above, students take additional elective units.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Modules are assessed separately on a module by module basis using a combination of coursework, practical assessment, and written examinations. Coursework assessments are varied and include, for example, laboratory reports, practical investigations, case studies, essays, reports, oral presentations and group work assignments.
