This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the Graphic Design industry. Students will be provided training in the essential skills of visual communication including graphic design, illustration, print, typography, time based media and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach students will be provided a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields.

Units studied can include: Visual communication in Art and Design Ideas Generation and Development in Art and Design Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design Professional Practice in Art and Design Project Design, implementation and Evaluation Design Method Design Principles Personal style in Graphic Design Typographic ideas Corporate Identity in Graphic Design Visual Communication in Graphic Design Management of the Design and Production Process Digital Image Creation and Development Drawing Techniques and Processes in Art and Design Communication with images in Art and Design Cultural Interpretation

The course is unit based and consists of coursework which includes projects, including live briefs, and written assignments. A variety of assessment methods will be employed including sketchbooks, case studies, reports, time constrained assessments, essays and presentations. The assessment of BTEC Higher National qualifications is criterion-referenced and the College is required to assess learners’ evidence against published learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. A Pearson-appointed External Examiner confirms that our internal assessment is to national standards.
