Course Summary

Our degree programmes encourage you to pursue your own historical interests while developing critical thinking and communication skills for post-university life. You will perfect your knowledge in Spanish language, which will allow you to explore sources written in this language and interpret current discourses and debates. You will develop your expertise in the historical and cultural contexts of the Hispanic world. The modern languages department provides a lively and well-equipped academic environment, emphasising effective linguistic training and the study of contemporary European and Latin American culture. We place great importance on the development of graduate skills vital for future employment through the integration of transferable skills into learning and teaching, in particular language skills and strategy training through all your years of study at Southampton. Southampton is ranked in the top three history departments for research, meaning our students learn from world-leading researchers (REF, 2014).We offer extremely flexible degree programmes, with a rare breadth of topics not commonly taught in British universities. Our unique archival resources include the Wellington, Palmerston and Mountbatten Papers, and the Parkes Archives specialising in Jewish history. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research. Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
