Course Summary

Your Natural Sciences degree will offer you the opportunity to work with real world problems, helping you to develop an understanding of the social, ethical, political and economic issues that arise in the application of Science. This interdisciplinary master's course is not like a traditional degree. We offer modules from across all the science disciplines. This will let you apply real-world contexts to global problems, such as: air pollution climate change plastic waste neurodegenerative diseases loss of biodiversity You will carry out significant and original research projects, including a six-month research placement where you could find yourself conducting laboratory experiments alongside some of the world’s leading researchers, investigating ocean currents on board a research vessel, trialling new biomedical devices in hospitals, or exploring extreme environments. We have a varied range of modules for all years. Examples of core modules for year one will include: Detecting the undetectable: Analytical Techniques in the Natural Sciences Independent Learning Skills in Science You must also choose from the following modules in year one: Earth and Ocean System, Electricity and Magnetism, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Cell Biology and Physiology, Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Equilibrium, Introduction to Practical Chemistry 1, Mathematical Methods for Scientists 1a, Origins of Biodiversity, Quantitative Methods. International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP): The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. GCSEs: The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements. English Language proficiency for international students: All programmes at the University of Southampton are taught and assessed in the medium of English (other than those in modern foreign languages).
