Course Summary

Spend your third year in Germany, studying maths at one of our partner universities. This degree is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in German, while developing your mathematical problem-solving skills. You’ll study pure and applied mathematics, statistics and operational research. You’ll graduate with sought after skills in mathematics as well as experience of working and studying in another language. Southampton is ranked 11th in the UK for Mathematics (Guardian University Guide 2021). This course is varied and covers the foundations of algebra, calculus and statistics. You’ll investigate the applications of mathematics in a variety of contexts and use mathematical and statistical models. As part of this course you’ll: - Be able to specialise in actuarial and financial mathematics, operational research or statistics - Become proficient in German, understanding subtleties and conversing easily in the language, both formally and informally - Spend your third year at one of our Erasmus partner institutions in Hamburg or Trier - Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space for maths students - Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R' You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design. Learning a language as well as the analytical and numerical skills acquired in a mathematics degree can significantly increase your career options. Whatever profession you choose, this programme can help you communicate effectively within the global economy.

Course Details - Modules

In the first, second and fourth years you will study mathematics modules alongside your chosen language. As well as improving your linguistic skills you will have the change to study other aspects of the culture through literature, film or theatre. A range of interdisciplinary options are also available. Your third year is spent in a country where your chosen language is spoken, offering you a unique opportunity to enhance your linguistic and cultural proficiency.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
