Course Summary
Our BA German and History will allow you to pursue a wide array of historical interests while studying the most widely spoken native language in Europe. Knowledge of German will give you the edge as a budding historian as it offers access to an expansive German-speaking scholarly literature and primary sources relevant to European and international history.
History explores a rich array of past cultures – ancient, medieval and modern. It sharpens your insight into how societies functioned in the past, encouraging a more critical awareness of the problems of the present. Modern Languages provides a lively and well-equipped academic environment, which focuses on linguistic training and the study of contemporary European culture.
Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research. Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. Southampton is ranked in the top three history departments for research, meaning our students learn from world-leading researchers (REF, 2014).We offer extremely flexible degree programmes, with a rare breadth of topics not commonly taught in British universities. Our unique archival resources include the Wellington, Palmerston and Mountbatten Papers, and the Parkes Archives specialising in Jewish history.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
