Course Summary
Our foundation year offers you a rapid introduction to biology, chemistry and mathematics, equipping you with the knowledge, skills and attributes that are needed to go on and successfully meet the challenges of your chosen undergraduate degree.
You will develop your understanding of the principles on which the sciences are based, and the mathematics underpinning the core science disciplines, which will enable you to apply scientific principles to solve problems. You will also undertake laboratory work and a variety of assignments to develop your critical thinking and problem solving.
You may also be interested in a foundation degree, if you are a mature applicant, with skills and experience from employment and can show recent study.
Course Details - Modules
Whatever degree course you are aiming for, you will take all the modules listed below. All modules are studied for the whole year. The coursework module integrates elements from the different disciplinary modules and is assessed by a range of approaches.

GSCI0008 Fundamentals of Biology,
GSCI0009 Fundamentals of Chemistry,
GSCI0011 Laboratories and Coursework,
GSCI0010 Mathematics for Scientists,
GENG0014 Routes to Success.
Students with an IELTS of 5.5 or 6.0 who already have the Mathematics required for their destination degree programme, will be required to follow the Language Pathway and will take GENG0016 English for Engineers and Scientists.

Typical entry criteria will be to achieve Distinction, Distinction in the Engineering Design or Mechatronic Engineering AQA Tech Level 3, plus grade B in one A level subject (excluding Maths)
Offers typically exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking. Pass in the associated science Practical is required where applicable.
We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

60 credits with a minimum of 45 credits at Level 3 of which at least 30 credits, including all credits from graded maths modules, must be graded Distinction and the remainder must be graded Merit.
We accept Engineering, Computer Science or Science Level 3 Access courses only. Applicants should offer at least one maths module.
Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education. Typical entry criteria will be to achieve grade B in one A level subject (excluding Maths) plus Cambridge Technical Diploma in Engineering (Level 3) with overall grade of Distinction, Distinction.
Additionally Distinctions are required in Maths for Engineering and Applied Maths for Engineering modules.
Offers typically exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking. Pass in the associated science Practical is required where applicable.
A typical offer for the IB is Pass with 32 points overall, with 16 points required at Higher Level including 5 points in Standard or Higher Level Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation).
Please note that we cannot accept the combination of subjects that make you eligible for direct entry to your chosen course e.g. taking both Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level. Please refer to our website for details about subject restrictions.
Applications where Higher Level subjects have been studied without the full Diploma, will also be considered on a case by case basis.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate an aptitude for mathematics and may be required to take our own mathematics test. Some applicants may also be invited to attend an interview.
