Course Summary

Your MSci Geophysics and Geology course will give you broad knowledge of contemporary geophysics and a range of geophysical, geological and mathematical skills, including excellent field skills and computer programming. You will gain an in-depth understanding of geological processes that have shaped the Earth and how physical principles can be applied to study processes operating in, on and around our planet. If you are looking for a professional career in geophysics or quantitative Earth science, this is the programme for you. This degree will equip you skills you can transfer readily into the world of work, and our students have been very successful in finding summer placements and subsequent employment in the geophysical industry. Accredited by the Geological Society of London, this means that our teaching is of the highest quality and approved by an independent body of academics and experts. We have a varied range of modules for all years. Examples of core modules for year one will include: Dynamic Earth, Earth Materials, Earth and Ocean System, Key Skills for Geoscientists, Mathematical Methods for Scientists 1b, Mathematical Methods for Scientists 1a, Dynamic Landscapes, Introduction to Ocean Biogeochemistry, Physics of the Ocean. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. GCSEs: achieve at least a Grade 4 in English, Science and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). English Language proficiency for international students: All programmes at the University of Southampton are taught and assessed in the medium of English (other than those in modern foreign languages). Therefore, all applicants must demonstrate they possess at least a minimum standard of English language proficiency. AQA Tech Levels: The University accepts the new AQA Tech Level qualification, which must be offered in combination with at least one A Level. Typical entry criteria for degrees in Engineering will be to achieve an A in the A Level plus D*D in the Tech Level, or A* in the A Level plus DD in the Tech Level.
