This programme gives you the opportunity to study two influential European cultures and their hugely important languages. Studying Spanish and French at Southampton offers you real insights into the cultures and societies of the larger Spanish and French speaking worlds and sharpens your understanding of their commonalities and differences.
On this degree you will complement your language learning with modules on French history and contemporary society, French literature and film, or French linguistic studies. You will also explore Spanish and Latin American studies, in particular, cultural studies, sociolinguistics, history and politics in addition to the study of the Spanish language. You will spend year three in a country where one of your chosen languages is spoken.
Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research.
