A BA in French from Southampton will allow you to specialise in the language and culture of the French-speaking world. You will acquire near-native speaker competence in French and study a range of topics within the broader field of French studies, focusing especially on the 20th and 21st centuries.

Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. You will be able to learn another language such as Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish from scratch, and reach graduate level in Spanish, Italian, German and Portuguese.

Course Details – Assessment Method
You will be assessed by more than simply essays and exams. Depending on the modules you choose, you will work in groups and teams; make presentations; submit group projects; undertake fieldwork; create portfolios and manage larger research projects such as dissertations. Your academic advisor will be available to provide regular and supportive advice, guidance and feedback on your progress.
You will find the key skills employers seek - such as time management, problem solving, team work, deadline and project management, cultural awareness, working on initiative and independently, relationship building and analysis - embedded in your learning. Above all, you will learn to communicate ideas and enthusiasm to a wide range of audiences in a way that is relevant and that they can understand.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.
The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
