Course Summary
English and History at Southampton offers you the opportunity to think about literature and history in absorbing and productive ways. This combination gives you vivid understandings and experiences of our cultures, social and political, artistic and intellectual, both past and present. It is an excellent grounding for work in museums and the Heritage industry, curating, archiving, government and policy making, journalism, media, law and publishing. Our year abroad courses give undergraduates the opportunity to study for an additional academic year at a university in another part of the world. Destinations include Europe, Asia and North America.
We offer a wide range of options, offering full coverage of English literary history and choices in world literature, creative writing and film, as well as the chance to study one or more languages as part of your course

Core modules incude: The Act of the Essay; Poetic Language; The Novel; Travelling Genres; Theory & Criticism; World Dramas; Literary Transformations; Group Research Project.
Optional modules include: Arthurian Worlds; Queens, Devils and Players in Early Modern England; Victorian Bestsellers; Early Film; The First World War; Childhood and Youth in Early Modern Society; The Space Age; Fashioning the Tudor Court; Women in Medieval England; American Cinema since 1965; Swashbuckers, Cut-throats, Revolutionaries: Five Hundred Years of Pirates in English Literature.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).
Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4"

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
