The University of Southampton Science Foundation Year is designed to provide you with a route to a science degree if you do not have the traditional entry qualifications. This programme may suit you if you are studying for A levels in subjects different from those normally required for these degrees. It may also interest you if you are a mature applicant, with skills and experience from employment and can show recent study, or if you come from a part of the world where the education system is different from the British A level system. Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees progression to the next stage of your degree. The year will develop your understanding of the principles on which the sciences are based and the mathematics underpinning these disciplines, and will enable you to apply scientific principles to solve problems. Our audiology courses are carefully structured to give you a comprehensive clinical training from day one, while developing essential academic, professional and employability skills. You'll learn from practising clinicians and researchers at the cutting edge of audiology, at the only UK university with in-house audiology and auditory implant services. On this integrated masters degree you'll gain a comprehensive knowledge of audiology and the clinical and professional skills needed to become an audiology healthcare professional. Throughout the course, you'll attend practical sessions in our dedicated skills laboratory, consolidating your skills during a 27-week placement, which starts at the end of year two and continues into year three. The final year of study will give you the opportunity to enhance your scientific and leadership skills through optional modules and in-depth experimental research in a field of audiology that interests you.

Course Details - Modules

Whatever degree course you are aiming for, you will take all the modules listed below. All modules are studied for the whole year. The coursework module integrates elements from the different disciplinary modules and is assessed by a range of approaches. Modules: GSCI0008 Fundamentals of Biology GSCI0009 Fundamentals of Chemistry GSCI0011 Laboratories and Coursework GSCI0010 Mathematics for Scientists GENG0014 Routes to Success Students with an IELTS of 5.5 or 6.0 who already have the Mathematics required for their destination degree programme, will be required to follow the Language Pathway and will take GENG0016 English for Engineers and Scientists. In year one of your Audiology degree you'll immerse yourself in the biological, psychological, social and technical elements of audiology, alongside clinical and professional skills. Modules –– Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology I, Audiology Clinical Placement I, An Introduction to Professional Practice, Biopsychosocial Basis of Audiology, Introduction to Hearing Science and Technology. In year two you'll develop your scientific, clinical and professional skills further, including clinical decision making and patient-centred communication skills. Modules –– Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology II, Audiology Clinical Placement II, Facilitating Effective Auditory Rehabilitation I & II, Two optional modules from across the University In year three you'll study specialist areas of audiology and finalise your clinical training. Modules –– Clinical and Professional Practice in Audiology III, Audiology Clinical Placement III, Individual Project, Introduction to Paediatric Audiology or Paediatric Audiology Your final year involves an in-depth research project and the chance to extend your specialist knowledge. Modules –– Applied Research Methods, Research Project, Related optional modules from audiology or from across the University. Example topics include: the assessment and management of vestibular disorders; the physiology and psychology of hearing; fundamentals of auditory implants; health management; statistics. Course Details – Assessment Method

A range of assessment methods are used on this programme to enable students to demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes. These include written examinations and assessments, oral presentations, individual and group work projects, Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), an Individual Record of Clinical Practice (IRCP) and Professional Development Portfolio (PDP). Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees progression to the next stage of your degree. Applicants must hold GCSE English Language (or GCSE English), Mathematics and Science (minimum grade C/4). English Language proficiency for international students: All programmes at the University of Southampton are taught and assessed in the medium of English (other than those in modern foreign languages). Therefore, all applicants must demonstrate they possess at least a minimum standard of English language proficiency. AQA Tech Levels: The University accepts the new AQA Tech Level qualification, which must be offered in combination with at least one A Level.
