Course Summary

Are you interested in studying past societies from both textual and material evidence? Apply for the BA in Ancient History and Archaeology degree at the University of Southampton and learn how to access the past through different approaches alongside the different stories they tell. You will have the opportunity to explore the past in a broad geographic and temporal context, providing you with an understanding of how the human species evolved, how human societies came into being and changed over time. Through our degree programme you will develop skills valued by future employers: to acquire, analyse and communicate new data and ideas, and to work independently and with others. The year abroad will allow you to experience an entirely new culture and learn or expand your language skills. Ancient History and Archaeology are interrelated which combined provide you with the opportunity to excellent insight into societies from the very earliest humans through to the Medieval world. You will learn about the defining events in the ancient world, but also about the religions and cultures which have shaped the modern world. Archaeology opens up a range of different periods, and introduces you to new techniques for accessing them from the scientific study of human remains to the reconstruction of past landscapes. You will undertake research-based fieldwork around the world in locations such as Greece, Croatia, Sweden, Egypt and Turkey. The range of modules available allows you to explore new topics and tailor your degree to your own interests. Our year abroad courses give undergraduates the opportunity to study for an academic year at a university in another part of the world. Destinations include Europe, Asia and North America.

Course Details – Assessment Method

Assessments of your knowledge and understanding are very varied, including examinations, essays, extended essays, practical assignments in both the laboratory and the field, presentations, portfolios and the dissertation. Progression is recognised in the assessment scheme, which tests the breadth and complexity of knowledge and understanding through to consolidation and application.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
