Costume Design and Practice with a Foundation Year

Course Summary

The foundation course is an exciting step towards your chosen degree. It provides an opportunity to develop skills to equip you on your professional journey into the creative industries. The programme encompasses elements of fashion design, fashion business and textile design degree routes. It provides a platform for you to share with and learn from others, while developing visual communication skills and processes. It will help you in building confidence and independence ready for the next stage of your degree. We aim to excite, engage and challenge you, pushing you to develop into a capable student with a great fashion and textiles aesthetic as well as an enthusiasm to learn. This four-year programme has been specifically designed to allow you to undertake additional level three study, to ensure you are successful on your chosen degree programme. After successful completion of your foundation year, you will have the flexibility to switch (should you wish to change direction) onto a number of related undergraduate degree programmes within the School of Fashion and Textiles. The BA (Hons) in Costume Design and Practice will nurture and develop your creativity to become a specialist in the craft of costume design and construction. You will explore the historical and cultural implications of designing for costume in a breadth of performance genres, including theatre, dance and film. The course team have extensive experience within all areas of performance having worked at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and Bristol Old Vic. They bring a wealth of knowledge, and a breadth of experience that will inform and support your progress to become a professional costume practitioner. The course encourages and supports collaboration with industry professionals, as well as undergraduate students from a range of disciplines. Past student collaborations have included theatre performance and events, photography, dance, animation, fashion design, and the Conservatoire. External collaborations have included projects with Area 51, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Gres Portela School of Samba in Rio de Janeiro. You will have the opportunity as part of your studies to explore the Birmingham School of Art Dress Archive and the Birmingham Institue of Art and Design archive using original materials to inform design, and to develop as a designer from original sources.

A maximum of 4 subjects are considered. These can be other A/S Levels (as long in a different subject) A-Levels or Level 3 equivalents.

Achieve a minimum of 80 tariff points achieved in either five Highers or from a combination of two Advanced Highers plus two Highers.
