Physics at Sheffield gives you hands-on experience working with leading academics on real research projects. This course emphasises theoretical and mathematical approaches to the laws of physics. It includes a theoretical or computational project.
There are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits.
You’ll spend your third year studying physics at a university in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand or the USA. The experience of living and studying in another culture gives you an edge in the jobs market, particularly if you want an international career.
The course comes with a built-in insurance offer: if you firmly accept (as your first choice) an offer of place on the MPhys, but your A Level grades are AAB, you’re guaranteed a place on the three-year BSc.
Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.
