Course Summary

Physics at Sheffield gives you hands-on experience working with leading academics on real research projects. This course emphasises theoretical and mathematical approaches to the laws of physics. It includes a theoretical or computational project. There are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits. The three-year BSc focuses on the fundamental knowledge and skills every physicist needs. If you’re interested in a research career, you might want to consider the four-year MPhys, which includes more research experience and the chance to study some topics in greater depth. Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.
