Physics at Sheffield gives you hands-on experience working with leading academics on real research projects. We teach the IT and programming skills that you’ll need for a career in industrial research. And there are plenty of opportunities for fieldwork: investigating dark matter 1km underground at Boulby Mine, or 2,400m above sea level at an observatory in the Canary Islands. We also send students to CERN in Geneva, for work placements and visits.
If you’re fascinated by the workings of the universe, time and the nature of reality, philosophy brings another dimension to your understanding of the science. You’ll spend roughly half your time in the Department of Philosophy, where you have the freedom to design your own curriculum. The department covers an unusually wide range of topics, including courses on major figures such as Aristotle, Descartes and Hegel.
The course comes with a built-in insurance offer: if you firmly accept (as your first choice) an offer of place on the MPhys, but your A Level grades are AAB, you’re guaranteed a place on the three-year BSc.
Many of our graduates become research scientists in academia and industry. Others go into aerospace, telecommunications, defence and energy. Employers include Ernst & Young, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Toshiba and the Home Office.
